Creative Reuse Lesson Plan First Grade: Families

Hand Print Mural
Cost per student: $.10 (not including the use of an iron)
Materials: Iron, fabric (I found a giant appliquéd globe on a sheet in the trash), fabric crayons, paper, markers, newspaper or towel to iron on top of.
Students will create an individual design to contribute to the whole group mural

Watercolor Family Portrait
Cost per student: $.05
Materials: Newsprint or other 12”x18” paper, crayons, water colors, newspaper, brushes, pencils, various skin tone crayons/markers/colored pencils
Students will create a mixed media family portrait

Creative Reuse Lesson Plan Fourth/Fifth grade: Colonial America

Potpourri Sachets
Cost per student: $.15 (this includes the sewing needles and other non-consumables)
Materials: Lacing cards and lacing, fabric (I cut up a silk upholstery sample book), potpourri, embroidery thread, tiny beads (optional), yarn darners (large pointy sewing needles), stuffing (I used fleece scraps), a few pairs of scissors, all the patience you can muster
Students will use sewing techniques to create a 3-D fabric form

Creative Reuse Lesson Plan Fourth/fifth grade: Colonial America

Block Printing Stamps
Cost per student: $.15
Materials: Rubber (foam works fine, I am using pieces of Nike promo sport court made from ground up recycled sneakers, it is 5”x5”x .25”), base to adhere it to (I am using 4”x 3” acrylic scraps from SCRAP), adhesive (depends on your other 2 materials, I am using double sided sticky glue dots), scissors, paper, pencil, trays, brayers, something to keep the workspace clean like plastic tablecloths, acrylic paint, paper or fabric to print onto (SCRAP has an overabundance of upholstery samples, I am going to offer those)
Students will create a block print stamp using Colonial American motifs, then use it to create a series of prints.

Animal Family Paper Collage
Cost per student: $.02
Materials: Paper scraps, scissors, paper for the background (I found a stack of 6”x7” paper someone was going to throw out), glue (I am using the the glue system with the paintbrushes but glue sticks would work too), animal family pictures or book
Students will create a collage depicting an animal parent and baby.

Fourth/Fifth Grade: Silhouettes

Creative Reuse Lesson Plan 4/5 Grade: Colonial America

Silhouettes
Cost per student: $.03
Materials: Large paper in 2 contrasting colors (12”x18”), scissors, glue sticks, light source (I commandeered old overhead projectors from the storage closet), pencils, push pins or tape.
Optional: paper strips, colored writing utensils
Students will trace and cut silhouettes of themselves and classmates, preserving their image in a simple and timeless way.

Creative Reuse Lesson Plan First Grade: Families

Family Pet Portraits
Cost per student: $.07 (the includes the oil pastels)
Materials: Oil pastels, thick paper, book about pets for reference, pencils
Optional: wire, bells, mat board samples
Students will create a portrait of a family pet they currently have, wish to have or used to own.
Elements of art: Color, shape, texture
Vocabulary: pet, portrait
Creative Reuse Lesson Plan Fourth/Fifth Grade: Colonial America

Quilt Blocks
Cost per student: $.05
Materials: 12”x12” paper for backing, fabric (you will need to cut it up into fairly uniform squares and triangles ahead of time, but any scraps will work [old clothing, leftovers from a pattern etc]. I am using fabric from sample books donated from an upholstery store), white glue (I am using my glue system with the paintbrushes), examples
Students will create a geometric quilt block reminiscent of colonial American quilts.
