String Texture Rubbing Plates (Linear measurement)

Cost per student: $.05 (that includes items that you would only use a small portion of for this lesson)

Materials: cardstock ( I have cards from someone’s art gallery opening, you know, that look like a postcard and have the gallery info on the back…), string and yarn with various textures (mine came from a free pile I was directed to on Craigslist), white glue, water, liquid starch, plastic containers from the recycle bin (like clamshells from the bakery), newspapers to protect the tables, rulers, scissors, sharpies, clean wet rags

Prep: mix up the glue/starch/water liquid. It’s not an exact science; I find 2 parts white glue to 1 part liquid starch, 1 part water makes a good stiffener.

Students will create texture rubbing plates using stiffened string laid out in a design.

Elements of art: line, texture

Vocabulary: rubbing plate, real, illusion

Rainbow Crayons by the Ounce!

Cost per student: $.20 (this includes the cost of the scales and muffin tins)

Materials: a handful of old crayons per student (broken is fine and actually preferred; in past experiences I offer to clean out the crayon tubs from different classrooms and teachers get a clean tub, I get the broken crayons I need!), old muffin tins (for crafts not baking), spring scales (you can also use balances and a mass set for this, adjust as needed), old disposable cups (lightweight, like Solo or Dixie – I use the ones I store markers in), crayon recipe chart (see photo), oven

Students will create a beautiful rainbow crayon for rubbings and large drawings while following a “recipe” involving weight and color.

Elements of art: color, form

Vocabulary: weight, primary, secondary, warm, cool

Measuring area of colors used in an artwork!

Cost per student: $.02

Materials: a sheet of graph paper (or paper on to which you’ve copied a 1 inch or 1cm grid – I am using paper that’s been copied onto one side already) and a tally chart for each student (see instructions below), 5 crayons or the like for each child.

Students will create a piece of artwork on a grid and subsequently record the total area covered by each of the colors they used to make the art.

Elements of art: color, space, shape

Vocabulary: Grid, area, square inches (or sq. cm, pick a unit of measurement and stick with it).
