Creative Reuse Lesson Plan Kindergarten: Plants

Seed Envelopes
Cost per student: $.15, but that includes the cost of permanent markers which would last 2-3 years
Materials: Permanent markers, laminate scraps (the laminating machine most schools have create a 6”x18” strip of waste every time they are used; it is built into the design of the machine. The librarian kindly saved the waste strips for me until I had enough), stapler, hole punch, yarn or ribbon scraps, newspaper, water, pipettes or droppers, paper towels, seeds you’ve soaked overnight.
Prep: besides soaking the seeds to give them a jumpstart on life, I made envelopes out of the laminate by folding an 8”x10” piece, in half, then turning in the edges, then stapling each side so it will hold water. See photos for a better idea.
Students will create an arty transparent envelope, used to sprout a seed.

- I displayed some exceptional work with some of the real postcards we looked at to inspire us!

- The backer page I glued to their art to make it look like a postcard. They can practice writing an address and text with wet or dry erase markers.

Creative Reuse Lesson Plan Second grade: Letter Writing

Giant Postcards
Cost per student: $.15, slightly more if you factor in the laminating
Materials: water color paints, 1 inch masking tape, white or light cardstock or heavy paper, water dishes, water, paint brushes, newspaper, clean wet rags, chalk pastels, backer paper to look like non-picture side of postcard, lots of postcards for examples, laminating machine or spray fix
Students will use a variety of techniques to create a landscape reminiscent of a postcard.

Kindergarten: Still Life Drawings

Still Life Drawings
Cost per student: $.15 (includes the cost of oil pastels which will last all year)
Materials: oil pastels, sturdy paper (I used a mix of printed-on-one-side cardstock and cut up colored file folders), lots of natural items like pine cones, vegetables, dried flowers etc, some vases and fabric, examples of still life oils, pencils
Students will draw what they see to create a traditional still life portrait

Creative Reuse Lesson Plan Fourth/Fifth grade: Colonial America

Potpourri Sachets
Cost per student: $.15 (this includes the sewing needles and other non-consumables)
Materials: Lacing cards and lacing, fabric (I cut up a silk upholstery sample book), potpourri, embroidery thread, tiny beads (optional), yarn darners (large pointy sewing needles), stuffing (I used fleece scraps), a few pairs of scissors, all the patience you can muster
Students will use sewing techniques to create a 3-D fabric form

4/5: Block Print Stamps

Creative Reuse Lesson Plan Fourth/fifth grade: Colonial America

Block Printing Stamps
Cost per student: $.15
Materials: Rubber (foam works fine, I am using pieces of Nike promo sport court made from ground up recycled sneakers, it is 5”x5”x .25”), base to adhere it to (I am using 4”x 3” acrylic scraps from SCRAP), adhesive (depends on your other 2 materials, I am using double sided sticky glue dots), scissors, paper, pencil, trays, brayers, something to keep the workspace clean like plastic tablecloths, acrylic paint, paper or fabric to print onto (SCRAP has an overabundance of upholstery samples, I am going to offer those)
Students will create a block print stamp using Colonial American motifs, then use it to create a series of prints.

A few things… One, thank you to the Dreaming Zebra foundation for fulfilling my wish of brayers, glue and stamp pads! They are local nonprofit where teachers can wish big and they try and do what they can to fulfill your wish. Teachers at school got an email through the school district and many passed it on to me and encouraged me to write in. Neat!
Also, my hours for February topped 118 volunteer hours in the school; that’s about 168 total for the month. I am up to 688 hours donated to Whitman ES since the school year began. Not too shabby.
The topics I will be combining art curriculum next trimester are
Kindergarten – Animals
First grade – Life cycles
Second grade – Animal Habitats
Third grade – Plant life
Fourth/Fifth grade – Planetary science
I am already thinking of crazy plans for these topics. I’ll go out with a bang for sure. 🙂
