Introduction to art, assessment, rules and procedures

Creative Reuse Lesson Plan                                        Week  1  Grade K-1

1st Trimester Whitman ES 2009-2010  written by Keri Piehl for SCRAP

Cost per student: $0

Materials: assessment chart (posterboard that’s been used on 1 side), writing utensils

Students will be able to: give the teacher an idea of their prior knowledge of art vocabulary and techniques, remember and apply art class rules to future sessions

Vocabulary: Reuse

Respect People, Respect the Art, Respect the Materials

1. Introduce self to class. Let them ask 3 questions about me.

2. Ask students to raise hands and tell you something they know about art. Record ideas on brainstorm chart.

3. Let students know they will be incorporating reuse into their art projects, stress reuse as using things again and again, using old things to make new things.

4. Pass around hands on examples

5. Introduce 3R triangle: the three points are the 3 Respect Rules.

Have them make a triangle shape with their thumbs touching and pointer fingers touching; repeat the Respect rules and have the kids echo you.

6. Post the art knowledge posters together in a community place in the school (cafeteria walls, etc.)

Reflections and feedback:

Start each future art lesson by having the kids show you the triangle and repeat the rules as a class.
